Excel upload feedback messages

When uploading your Excel file to manage Dimensions, you may receive certain feedback messages on your file.

These can either be informational messages detailing what data would be updated if you proceed with uploading the file, or error messages denoting something is not right with the file and preventing it from being uploaded.

This page explains in detail what these messages mean.

Informational messages

Uploading this Excel file will create these new values

What happened: Your new Excel file contains additional level values which will be added to your dimension.

What you can do: Check if the changes are the desired ones and confirm them.

This Excel file doesn't add any new values to what you already have

What happened: Your new Excel file does not contain any new levels or level values compared to the old one.

What you can do: Make sure you select the correct, updated file.

A level value has been moved to a different parent

What happened: A level value in your Excel file is mapped to a different parent than it currently has in the dimension. Uploading will move the value under the new parent in the hierarchy.

What you can do: Confirm the upload if the new parent assignment is the intended change.

A level is being added or removed

What happened: Your Excel file adds a new level (column) to the dimension or removes an existing one. This changes the structure of the dimension itself, not just its values.

What you can do: Confirm the upload if the schema change is intended.

Your Excel file has missing row(s)

What happened: Your Excel file is missing level values that exist in the current dimension. Valsight treats these as a request to delete those values when you confirm the upload. Depending on whether the values are used elsewhere, you will see one of three outcomes:

  1. If the values are not used anywhere, the dialog shows a preview of the rows to be removed. Confirm to delete them.

  1. If the values are referenced by data sources, nodes, line-items, charts, the dialog lists them and warns that those references will no longer work after the upload. You can confirm anyway and clean up the references later, or cancel and restore the rows in your Excel file.

  1. If the values are used as level links to another dimension, the upload is blocked. Open the other dimension, remove the level links, and re-upload. You can also remove level values via Dimension Management.

Errors

Your Excel file has duplicate row(s)

What is wrong: Two or more rows in the dimension table are identical. Every row needs to be unique.

What you can do: Remove the duplicate rows from your Excel file and upload it again. The error message indicates which rows are duplicated.

Your Excel file has ambiguous mapping(s)

What is wrong: The Excel file contains level values that map to more than one parent value.

What you can do: Make sure your Excel file follows the structural guidelines for dimensions in Valsight (Creating Dimensions). Most importantly, every level value needs to be uniquely mapped to a single parent level.

Your Excel file has missing column(s)

What is wrong: The number of columns in the Excel file you are trying to upload is lower than the number of levels in that particular dimension. The number of columns needs to match the number of levels in any given dimension.

What you can do: The error message you received should also denote which columns are missing. Please ensure those columns are present in your Excel file, then upload it again.

The number of sheets in your Excel file doesn't match the existing structure

What is wrong: The number of worksheets in your new Excel file does not match that of the old one.

What you can do: Make sure that the number of sheets in your new Excel file is similar to that of the old one. Alternatively, you can write a # before any additional worksheets so the software ignores them.

Your Excel file is too big for the upload

What is wrong: The Excel file is larger than the allowed size limit (e.g. 20mb).
